Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

I am committed to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in my lab. Inclusivity, the key to maintaining diversity, applies to age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, physical disability, culture and nationality. I intend to foster a culture where people from all backgrounds feel included, heard and respected, recognizing barriers in an inequitable education system and aiming to promote equity in terms of access to opportunities and resources. My goal is to provide an environment under which our science and mental health can thrive.

Increasing Engagement Through Connection

I will use my voice and privilege to empower students, and present them with opportunities that enrich their academic experience. To foster a sense of belonging, students need to identify with role models in desirable positions, knowing they are supported in their endeavours. To achieve this, I will always try to maintain a working environment that is inclusive, inspiring, and fun to be part of.

Mentorship Style and Teaching Philosophy

Mentoring students remains one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. I am always looking for enthusiastic trainees who are interested in studying the neurobiology of learning and memory. I view the dynamic between me and my students as developmental, in that it is my job to help them grow into independent researchers and to give them the resources, skills, and confidence needed to achieve their professional goals. I strive to include their input in project design, and encourage them to ask questions and dig into the literature to solve problems. I also try to offer them a breadth of knowledge when it comes to learning techniques. If you are interested in joining please get in touch.
