MEMORY MESSABOUT MEETING

Bringing together memory researchers (human, non-human, computational, etc.) to exchange knowledge and inspire each other. We started this event, tailored specifically to trainees, to give them an opportunity to practice presenting their research in a professional setting in a welcoming and stress-free environment. This day long data-blitz style event aims to foster cross talk between the diverse memory labs in the area, while giving trainees a platform to disseminate their work and network with each other. The meetings have attracted a diverse audience with many different institutions represented and have been lots of fun! Registration is always free. We embrace and value the diversity of all our attendees. It is our policy to be inclusive and mindful of this diversity.

BRAINS ON! PODCAST

In this episode, we take a trip down memory lane. We visit a campus full of hippos to learn how memories are stored, and drop in on a badger trainer to see how she recalls “the great badger blunder.” We also explore how many memories can our brains store. Hint: way more than you probably think. You may have heard of deja vu, but did you know there are other vus too? We found a lost game show where these vus are contestants. Tune in to find out!

SKYPE A SCIENTIST

This program enables scientists to video conference with students in classrooms. I had the pleasure of hosting a 3rd grade class. What a fun and fulfilling experience it was! In this class we talked about what Pixar’s Inside Out got right and what they got wrong about memory. Dissecting Memory: Inside Out.

EQUITY IN THE TECH AGE

In an ever-growing digital world bridging the digital divide in education has been a challenge. To aid youth facing financial hardship, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada partnered with Microsoft & Futureshop in a program called CanTech to establish Technology Centres where youth could gain highly valued IT skills necessary to navigate this age of information. I am proud to have been part of the team who set this in motion and hope to continue helping youth from underserved communities get the skills they need for the future they want.
