Sofía Cañuelas del Valle

Sofía is a senior at Loyola University Chicago majoring in Cognitive/Behavioral Neuroscience. She is originally from Puerto Rico and initially became interested in psychology research through her high school International Baccalaureate Program. Upon the discovery that her maternal lineage carried the Alzheimer's gene, she wanted a deeper understanding of the brain and brain pathology. To that end, she started by attending a summer program at the Barnard College of Columbia University, where she was granted the Distinguished Medical Science Student Award and completed a secondary course in Psychology. She balances her studies with service and is passionate about neuroscience - aspiring to provide relief for patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases. This led her to the Brain Exercise Initiative, which has started its very own chapter at Loyola. As Vice-President of that organization, she trains volunteers and is dedicated to ensuring that the patients are benefiting from their work in nursing homes. She also helps to support children bravely battling cancer in collaboration with various organizations that provide comfort and support. A few of the events they have held are movie nights, “superhero” hospital visits, and donation drives. Back home, she contributes to Signet y Vive by supporting the staff and coaches of the company’s transformative retreats. Outside of her studies and service, she enjoys exploring the city of Chicago and discussing books and films with friends. Her greatest joy comes from spending time with her sweet puppy companion, Koda!
